Tour and concert statistics

First post updated. Never before has so many songs been played in one year. Bumblefoot has almost passed Izzy on number of gigs.

If Izzy keeps showing up at gigs they could run neck and neck for a while.

As a guest artist who only plays on a few songs at a show, I am not crediting him with having played a whole concert.

I knew that. I guess I was inspired to make a snarky post because I really very very much desire Izzy to keep out in the open on stages, anywhere, and releasing new music as opposed to going underground as in out of the public radar completely. He could become "most frequent guest", yes?

I think that is a good idea. I should compile a list of guests. I will actually add that to my to-do list.

First post updated with average no. of songs per gig in 2013 (19.6) and total no. of shows in 2013 (10, so far).

The short setlist no. has a lot to do with the Soho House gig in February dragging the average down, but even if we don't take that into account the average has dropped markedly from last year.

It's been fairly long shows with an average of 23.7 songs per show, second highest after 24.0 in 2012. The sets have also included a few songs that haven't been played before: Teenage Kicks and Holidays in the Sun (Tommy's "solo songs"), Raw Power, and Abnormal (Bumblefoot's "solo song") in addition to a blast from the past: Attitude.

Some changes:



- As far as setlist variation go, 2014 hasn't been bad at all. A lot of it has to do with greatly varying set lengths, though.

- The band has passed 100 different songs played live now.

- Estranged and Civil War have pushed My Michelle out of top-20 songs played, and Better has passed Street of Dreams for place 13.

2017 was one beast of a year! Close to the most shows ever in a year, the most number og songs played, the longest average setlists, and the longest show ever at The Forum on November 29.

But why the total number of shows is 929 when there are 957 threads in the concert database? The other 28 shows are not all rehearsals and video shoots, right? Or the script doesn't count shows where there is no setlist?

That's a good question. I am confident the 929 is correct, because that number comes from an Excel file that I have where each show has its own column (so it is just a matter of counting the columns). It could be that the concert database contains some show thread duplicates and threads that aren't really supposed to be there, as well as some rehearsals and video shoots, and in addition to the four October shows that already have their own threads.

Setlist.fm counts 941 shows, but they might count video shoots and might also contain some pages for shows that were actually cancelled. They also have some shows that I would prefer to have some documentation on before including, like a June 12, 1985 show at The Stone.

Right. I forgot that the Sept./Oct. 2019 shows have been added. And I noticed a couple of duplicates, e.g. the 1987 show in McAllen, Texas.

I also just made this, and I will probably try to squeeze it into the infographics later. It shows what albums are represented in live shows over the years in % of total. It makes it easier to spot some developments that might not always be obvious since the setlist lengths have changed throughout the years.

So, as an example, songs that would end up on Appetite accounted for a little bit less than 30 % of the sets in 1985, songs that would end up on Lies (or Live Like A Suicide) accounted for about 30 %, songs that would end up on the Illusions accounted for about 15 %, covers that the band hasn't released accounted for 20 % and unreleased GN'R songs accounted for about 8 %.

As you can see, CD songs were only played from 2001 and onwards. This is different than for songs from every other album that have been played in years prior to their official release on an album. CD songs also reached "peak setlist dominance" in 2009, which is as we would expect when a band has a new album to plug.

Songs off Appetite has taken a large part in the setlists throughout the history of the band, especially in 1987-1989 when the album was fresh. Interestingly, it comprised a much larger part of the setlists in 2001-2002, and 2006 than in 2009 and onwards. As an example, in 2002 they accounted for more than 50 % whereas now in 2019 they accounted for less than 30 %. This is contrary to a popular opinion that the band has become more focused on playing songs from Appetite in recent years.

Playing covers (that they haven't released themselves, like the Seeker, Wichita, Glad to be Here, etc), really only started in 2006. The band has been doing more and more of this, from 5 % in 2006 to 12-15 % in 2018-2019, although it is a very slow development. They did play covers in 1991, too, but these would either end up on the forthcoming UYIs or TSI? and are therefore listed under these albums. What is new today, are covers that the band has no intention of releasing in the future. And of course the band relied on covers in its early days, when they had fewer original songs to choose from.

The main difference between the setlist composition in 2019 vs 1991-1992, is that now CD songs and covers have replaced some of the UYI songs, which is again is natural since UYIs were fresh in 1992. Otherwise, the composition isn't all that different except for the emergence of cover songs.
